Alpacas
You might wonder why alpacas became part of the ranch. The answer is simple, they are easy to care for, incredibly unique, and each one brings its own personality to the pasture.
Compared to sheep, alpacas are low maintenance and calm by nature. They are quiet animals that prefer the company of their herd and tend to keep to themselves, creating a peaceful presence around the ranch. While they may not be as interactive as sheep or goats, they have a charm of their own, with their long necks, expressive eyes, and gentle behavior.
Around the ranch, there is a natural pecking order. Goats tend to take the lead, followed by sheep, with alpacas happily taking a more relaxed role. They coexist well and share space without issue, often grazing together or resting nearby.
One of the many benefits of alpacas is their fleece, which is soft, valuable, and highly sought after. They are also incredibly tidy animals, naturally keeping specific areas for waste, which makes them easy to manage and beneficial for maintaining pasture health.
While alpacas are sometimes thought of as protectors for other livestock, that has not been my experience. However, they are alert and will stand their ground against smaller animals when needed.
Alpacas are also smaller than many people expect, typically weighing between 80 to 150 pounds, making them manageable for smaller properties and micro farms. Because of their longer gestation period, we only have a limited number available at any given time.
Occasionally, we offer alpacas for sale to the right homes. If you are interested in adding one to your property or learning more, we welcome you to reach out.
